Funding Your Summer Experience

architects have turned to domain-specific hardware accelerators to improve the performance and efficiency of computing systems. However, programming these systems entails significant modifications to the software stack to properly leverage the specialized hardware. Moreover, the accelerators become obsolete quickly as the applications evolve. What is needed is a structured approach for generating programmable accelerators and for updating the software compiler as the accelerator architecture evolves with the applications. In this talk, I will describe a new agile methodology called AHA for co-designing programmable hardware accelerators and compilers. Our methodology employs a combination of new programming languages and formal methods to automatically generate the accelerator hardware and its compiler from a single specification. This enables faster evolution and optimization of accelerators, because of the availability of a working compiler. I will showcase this methodology using three generations of coarse-grained programmable accelerator chips that we designed using this flow: (1) Amber, that targets dense image processing and machine learning, (2) Onyx, that optimizes dense performance over Amber and additionally supports sparse tensor algebra and finally (3) Opal, that further optimizes for sparse machine learning applications. 

Bio: Priyanka Raina received the B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 2011, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 2013 and 2018, respectively. She was a Visiting Research Scientist with NVIDIA Corporation in 2018. Since 2018 she is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where she works on domain-specific hardware architectures and agile hardware–software codesign methodology. Dr. Raina is a 2018 Terman Faculty Fellow. She was a co-recipient of the Best Demo Paper Award at VLSI 2022, the Best Student Paper Award at VLSI 2021, the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC) Best Paper Award in 2020, the Best Paper Award at MICRO 2019, and the Best Young Scientist Paper Award at ESSCIRC 2016. She has won the DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2024, Sloan Research Fellowship in 2024, the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award in 2023, the Intel Rising Star Faculty Award in 2021, and the Hellman Faculty Scholar Award in 2019. She was the Program Chair of the IEEE Hot Chips in 2020. She serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits and IEEE Solid-State Circuits Letters.

“Inspired and Outraged: The Making of a Feminist Physician” tells the story of Alice Rothchild's journey from 1950's good girl to irreverent, feisty, feminist obstetrician-gynecologist forging her own direction in the contradictory, sexist world of medicine. As a child who came of age in the turbulent 1960s, she was compelled to create a path in the often outrageous, male-dominated medical field, repeatedly finding herself to be a first: accepted into an ob-gyn residency, opening an all-woman practice, working with midwives, challenging the status quo, shaped by her early involvement with Our Bodies Ourselves. Rothchild's poems are steeped in the often-shocking history of medicine and the conflicted sexual politics of the second half of the twentieth century. More about Alice Rothchild

Alice Rothchild: Inspired and Outraged: The Making of a Feminist Physician Book Talk

Abstract:

This talk explores how patient-generated data from wearables, ambient devices, and digital health tools can transform the delivery and quality of individualized clinical care. Digital Biomarkers (DBx) and Digital Therapeutics (DTx) leverage AI to convert raw data into action, helping clinicians adjust treatments, patients manage conditions, and researchers understand differentiated outcomes. Successes in Parkinson’s management and metabolic interventions demonstrate the value of integrating these technologies into specific care pathways. However, to realize scalable and affordable benefits for patients, providers, and payers will require implementing hybrid care systems that optimize patient-clinician collaboration across conditions and episodes of care. 

Bio: 

Deborah Estrin is a Professor of Computer Science at Cornell Tech in New York City where she holds The Robert V. Tishman Founder's Chair, serves as the Associate Dean for Impact, and is an Affiliate Faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her research interests are in digitally-enabled innovations that support patients and providers in optimizing clinical outcomes and quality of life. Estrin founded the Public Interest Technology Initiative (PiTech) at Cornell Tech, which promotes public impact as a component of students' training and future careers. Estrin was previously the Founding Director of the NSF Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) at UCLA; pioneering the development of mobile and wireless systems to collect and analyze real time data about the physical world.  Estrin's honors include: the IEEE Internet Award (2017), MacArthur Fellowship (2018), and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal (2022). She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007), the National Academy of Engineering (2009), and the National Academy of Medicine (2019).

You are invited to a two-session luncheon book club. The book we will be discussing is Assembling Tomorrow: A Guide to Designing a Thriving Future  by Scott Doorley and Carissa Carter. The dates for the book discussion are Friday, January 31 and Friday, February 28, from noon to 1:30pmEST. The book investigates the intangibles, the mysterious forces that contribute to the oﬀ-kilter feelings of today, and follows up with actionables to help you alter your perspective and ﬁnd opportunities in these turbulent times. Mixed throughout are histories of the future, short pieces of speculative ﬁction that illustrate how things go haywire and what might be in store if we don’t set them straight.

 

Each session will be interactive; we will discuss two chapters from the “Intangibles” section of the book and two chapters from the “Actionables” section:

 

January 31 from 12pm to 1:30pmEST will focus on chapters 1, 2, 5, and 6: Connections, Flow, Be Awkward, and Shapeshift.February 28 from 12pm to 1:30pmEST will focus on chapters 3, 4, 7, and 8: Feelings, Make-Believe, Disorient Yourself, and Aim for Imperfection. 

In November, MAD hosted a book launch of Assembling Tomorrow.  The presentation was captivating and sparked my interest in the book.  Why revisit a book we have already featured? To take the opportunity to dig a little deeper and benefit from the perspectives of others. Assembling Tomorrow is a fascinating read that is both a cautionary tale and an action plan for improved designs. We hope you can join us!

About the Instructor

Cynthia Graber is co-host/co-founder of the internationally popular and acclaimed podcast Gastropod, about the science and history of food. She's also an award-winning print reporter and radio producer whose work has been featured in magazines and radio shows including Wired, Fast Company, The New Yorker, Studio 360, The World, and many others. She launched Gastropod with Nicola Twilley in 2014; the show covers everything from calories to CRISPR and pawpaws to pudding. They're regularly featured in best of lists and critic's picks, as well as recognized with awards. The Los Angeles Review of Books called Gastropod one of the most intelligent food podcasts around, and WNYC compared the show to a great cocktail — substantial, nuanced, and not over too fast. Cynthia spent 2012-2013 as a Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT and is an instructor in the MIT Graduate Program in Science Writing, and she was recently a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia.

Rhea Vedro leads fine metals instruction in The Merton C. Flemings Materials Processing Laboratory 4-006. Her courses include 3.093 Metalsmithing: Objects and Power, 3.095 Introduction to Metalsmithing, and MIT Morningside Academy for Design DesignPlus seminars. Vedro is a metalsmith creating at the intersection of art, materiality and healing. Her research explores metalsmithing as a cultural signifier of values, power and protection across belief-systems and time. Trained first as a jeweler, her current studio practice is primarily hollow-form steel sculpture. Before joining DMSE, Vedro was a Boston Public Art Triennial Accelerator Fellow and served as Director of Community Engagement with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Vedro taught metalsmithing at UW-Madison and SUNY New Paltz. Her project portfolio includes the City of Boston Mayor's Office of Arts + Culture, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Artisans Asylum, North Bennet Street School, Vizcaya Museum, Queens Museum, The New York City Parks Foundation, and museums, schools, and creative community spaces throughout the Americas. Vedro holds an MFA in Metalsmithing from SUNY New Paltz.

The Coming Strategic Revolution of Artificial Intelligence: The U.S.-China Contest and the Sources of Competitive Advantage

Professor Aaron Bateman from George Washington University will speak at the MIT Security Studies Program's Wednesday Seminar.

Drawing from archival work in a half dozen countries, Professor Bateman will discuss how the United States has leveraged allies since the Cold War to secure access to vital real estate abroad that enables it to project power through space. In analyses of space competition, scholars and policy experts have focused on activities in orbit and neglected the global terrestrial infrastructure necessary for military and civilian space operations. Access to overseas territories for basing space infrastructure has long been a source of comparative U.S. advantage and has important implications for U.S. - China competition today.

MIT in 3:00 continues the tradition of The Media Spectacle, honoring the late Comparative Media Studies program administrator Chris Pomiecko, founder of the Media Spectacle, and celebrating his love for filmmaking. MIT in 3:00 has been inspired by Antje Ehmann’s and Harun Farocki’s world-wide video project “Labour in a Single Shot” that explored the subject of work through 1-2 minute video clips. MIT in 3:00 asks competitors — What is your MIT? And can you show it in 3 minutes?

Join for an evening of connection and creativity with MIT Alumna Jen Gouldstone, a Course 6 alum and local business owner at Craft Loft, a women and minority owned business that features local artisans, plants, and a walk-in DIY craft space. This program offers the chance to learn about Jen’s creative career journey, showcasing non-linear career paths and inspiring you to think expansively about your own future. At this event, you’ll also have a chance to build connections with others while unwinding and de-stressing through a fun crafting activity! 

Gong Ke (Jen) Gouldstone is a business owner and investor with broad experiences in consumer goods and enterprise software.  Ms. Gouldstone started in the tech industry, leading efforts at Google, TripAdvisor and several VC-backed startups.  In 2019, Ms. Gouldstone launched a services business to provide employee engagement and wellness to corporate clients.  Ms. Gouldstone is also the founder of a new experiential retail brand, Craft Loft, with its flagship store located in Cambridge, MA.

Ms. Gouldstone supports the entrepreneurial community as an angel investor and consultant for early stage businesses.  Ms. Gouldstone is an alumna of Harvard Business School (MBA ‘15) and MIT (EECS BS ‘99, MEng ‘00).  She enjoys life with her husband and their three energetic boys.

This CAPD event is open to undergraduate, graduate students, and postdocs. Space is limited to 30 attendees. Registration required in Handshake.

Crafting in Community with MIT Alum Jen Gouldstone

MITdesignX seeks diverse, interdisciplinary teams working on challenging ideas with clear vision, passion and drive to design solutions and launch a real venture.  Applications go through a rigorous selection process that reviews ideas based on human, environmental and social impact, feasibility, uniqueness, and scalability as well as team composition, diversity and skillset.

Up to 12 teams are selected for each cohort. Applicants can include graduate students, researchers, staff and faculty members from across MIT, as well as their colleagues from other institutions or industry.

Participants receive a 10K seed grant, 18 credits, workspace, and mentoring. Apply here now!
